Sons of Nowhere - Ratt on the Beach by MarcelPerez Sons of Nowhere - Ratt on the Beach by MarcelPerez
Illustration for one of the short stories released before the Sons of Nowhere novel, written by :iconnickalmand: !

I designed all the characters for the novel some months ago, so I'm always really happy when I'm asked to do more work for it, since I feel the characters a bit mine too in a way, and feel attached to them =)

I had a lot of fun doing that one because it really was the first time I tried this kinda color and tried to give it this more "pictoric" feel to it. Will have to improve in the future though =)

Also, not happy with the feet, though I guess I'll have to make them better in the upcoming times =P AT LEAST I think they actually look like he's burying them in the sand, as supposed... xD

YOU CAN SEE MORE NEW WORK FROM ME AND SOME UNRELEASED SKETCHES AT MY ARTIST PAGE: [link]

Hope you like!!

Cheers!

I really like your work on the atmosphere here. I can really feel the wind, or the sand, I can imagine what it must feel like to be there.

The colours are so nicely smooth and soft and the colours you used are nicely subtle, yet they are somehow glowing, without being too distracting or strong. I think the sky is especially cool, because of the warm and cold colour it has and the shape of the clouds. And I like how you establish the wind through the hair and the sweater.

The face of the boy also turned out pretty likeable, I like his expression, it's such a sweet melancholy kind of expression. So all in all this is pretty great work! :)

I like the clouds and the contrast between the vertical elements and the horizontal ones. They divide up the picture very neatly. I agree with you about the feet, though-- I think part of the problem is not just the anatomy of the feet themselves, but that the sand doesn't have the right texture, so we're not reading it as something permeable.

Go to a playground, bury your feet in the sand, take a photo, look at it when you re-draw that part of this image. It simply does not look like feet – buried or not.

You could always say the doctor amputated his toes again, and that they're taking a while to grow back.
